
Tesla has temporarily halted its Full Self-Driving (FSD) software trial in China, awaiting regulatory approval before resuming its operations. This move follows an initial rollout of the free trial, which was scheduled between March 17 and April 16 but was put on hold after concerns from regulatory bodies and users.
Regulatory Roadblocks
The Chinese regulatory environment poses unique challenges for Tesla. Unlike in the United States, where Tesla’s FSD software is trained using data collected from its fleet of vehicles, China has strict data privacy laws preventing Tesla from utilizing local driving data for software improvement. The automaker assured customers that the FSD feature would be made available as soon as the approval process is completed, urging patience among its user base.

To navigate these regulatory hurdles, Tesla has partnered with Chinese tech giant Baidu. This collaboration is expected to help Tesla enhance the FSD software’s performance within China by leveraging Baidu’s mapping and navigation technologies.
